Young Scientists for Africa

Young Scientists for Africa (YoSA) is a registered charity supporting young African science students by: - Awarding scholarships to attend the annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). - Creating a student network in Africa to enable and encourage careers in science. This is necessary because: - Extensive analysis has demonstrated that Africa needs science, not just aid, to address the socio-economic and public health challenges it faces. - Africa needs young African scientists to lead the charge on reshaping the continent and improving and saving African lives. What YoSA offers: YoSA was established to support young African science students who don't typically have access to the same opportunities as those in other parts of the world. A central component of YoSA is a scholarship programme to sponsor African science students to attend the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). Proper representation of African students at this international forum is hugely important and before the creation of YoSA there was no representation of students from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa; a continent that constitutes approximately 20% of the world's youth population. YoSA works with leading scientists and scientific initiatives in Africa to identify the best young African scientific talent. These students are then sponsored to attend the London International Youth Science Forum - an annual event which attracts over 500 of the world's best science students from more than 70 countries, many of whom have won national science competitions - and are given the chance to engage with world leading scientists in a two week programme of lectures, debates and visits to research institutions. At LIYSF, YoSA students have the opportunity to share their perspectives and create lasting relationships with an audience of other young scientists from all over the world. They also raise the profile of African science by introducing other students to the challenges and opportunities for science in Africa. YoSA operates through a network of facilitators and has established links with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (https://www.gatesfoundation.org/), The Wellcome Trust (https://wellcome.ac.uk/), The Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) (http://aesa.ac.ke/), Projekt Inspire (http://projektinspire.co.tz/) and the Next Einstein Forum (https://nef.org/). Through the support of its network of facilitators YoSA sponsors open and fair selection processes to identify talented young African scientists, for whom other financial support would not be available, and who are committed to pursuing science careers in Africa. The facilitators also support scholarship students locally with their visa and passport requirements as they have typically never travelled outside their own country before. Our ambition is to support young African scientists, not just in attending LIYSF, but also in creating a network that can link into other African science initiatives such as Next Einstein Forum (https://nef.org/) and Africa Research Excellence Fund (http://www.africaresearchexcellencefund.org.uk/) as they progress in their education and careers. We have directly facilitated introductions for our students with these and other leading science organisations in Africa and we actively monitor and encourage the progress of their scientific development through these connections. Each of our scholarship students has returned to Africa with a determination to succeed in science. They have been very proactive in communicating their experiences at LIYSF within their schools and local communities and inspire others pursue careers in science. They are each required to write a report of their experiences as part of the scholarship we provide and this forms the basis of these presentations. Our students are fantastic ambassadors for science in Africa and it's no exaggeration to say that YoSA and LIYSF have had a life changing effect on them and their ambitions for their future careers as African scientists. What is LIYSF: The London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) is a two week residential event held at Imperial College London, with lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists, visits to industrial sites, research centres, scientific institutions and organisations, including world class laboratories and universities. LIYSF attracts over 500 of the world's leading young scientists, aged 16-21 years, from more than 70 countries. EducAid Sierra Leone

Our mission is to promote and provide high-quality, holistic education to the underprivileged young people of Sierra Leone. We believe that the education of young women and men is essential to: unlock human potential, overcome poverty, improve wellbeing, build democracy, and that it is the cornerstone of stable development. For the last 25 years EducAid has been working to restore and strengthen education during and in the aftermath of Sierra Leone's civil war (1991-2002). During the conflict, education was an early casualty with many teachers fleeing the country and thousands of children being denied access to education. The country is still struggling to rebuild schools, train teachers and reach vulnerable girls and boys who are yet to see the inside of a classroom. We believe in the power of education to eliminate poverty and the challenges standing in the way of a democratic, dignified and globally-engaged Sierra Leone. EducAid provides free, high quality education to some of the most vulnerable and underprivileged children in Sierra Leone. EducAid operates 7 free schools, serving 1,200 children (1 Primary, 4 Junior Secondary and 2 Senior Secondary). The effectiveness of EducAid's innovative, student-centred approach to education is demonstrated by the fact that, despite many of our students coming from turbulent backgrounds, they regularly achieve 85% pass rates in all national exams. EducAid also trains teachers at over 100 partner schools as part of our Quality Enhancement Programme (QEP) working closely with communities and local education officials to raise the standard of education for children across the Port Loko district and beyond. Furthermore, EducAid run a tertiary-level degree course with the University of Makeni. EducAid's success stems from its grassroots and Sierra Leonean-driven approach. Of our 120 staff, only 3 are UK based with only 3 expats in Sierra Leone. Most EducAid staff are former students, knowing first hand the vulnerability faced by children in Sierra Leone and the power of education to change this, they inform our work each day. EducAid has spent decades developing relationships and earning the trust of communities by working alongside them. This is evidenced by communities giving EducAid land for schools, attending school meetings, community elders working with EducAid to keep girls in school, and EducAid's work as a trusted, stable presence during Ebola. EducAid was one of the few organisations that stayed on the ground, converting schools to care centres and delivering remote learning via radio broadcasts and moped-delivered USB sticks. EducAid also opened doors to children, many of whom are girls, who had lost their families to Ebola, and more recently to the devastating mudslides. EducAid's programs and innovations work because they come from the staff, students and communities they serve.

Growing a Wood - Growing Community - Growing Knowledge and Understanding 10 years - 10,000 children - 10,000 trees This is a conservation project that has its eye set firmly on the need for future environmental stewardship. Planetary conservation and protection of biodiversity needs more champions than ever before and the young people in our society are the decision-makers of tomorrow. With a growing disconnect between young people in urban communities and the natural environment, it is more important than ever before to put them at the heart of environmental projects. We have formed a COMMUNITY of 25 local schools, youth groups, volunteers and businesses working in partnership together and with specialist environmental organisations. Our aim over the decade 2012-2021 is to involve every young person in our community in creating new woodland, somewhere to relax, to enjoy, to learn. Once the 12-acre wood is complete, tree planting will continue through partnerships with local landowners as we plant outwards from Harmony Woods creating green corridors that link to nearby woodland and copses. We offer regular volunteering in nature for all irrespective of age or ability and offer training in green crafts, including coppicing, constantly striving to grow the volunteer base both in numbers and capacity. The first 5 years were spent establishing the project; the second 5 years is about realising its potential, a major part of which is to support 6 of our 25 schools to develop programmes of outdoor learning linked to arts and science and based on the wood that their students are helping to plant. We are currently fundraising to employ an education officer, fund outdoor learning programmes led by local artists and convert a pair of steel containers into an off-grid woodland 'Cabin', an all-seasons base for volunteers and a teaching space for all, connecting people to nature and local heritage.

FirstLight Trust

FirstLight Trust's mission is to rehabilitate those leaving and those who have left the Armed Forces and Emergency Services back into their communities, whatever that looks like for each individual. FirstLight Trust's key motivation for helping members of the military and emergency service community is the lack of grass roots support readily available to those who are frequently considered by other charitable organisations to be beyond available resources, who have 'fallen through the net' of charitable support. These individuals may have been discharged prior to their diagnosed needs having been met, or before the full depth of (complex) need has been identified; after leaving they have often spiralled down through debt, addictions, may be unemployed or are often deemed 'unemployable'. FirstLight Trust has and continues to fine-tune the delivery of such support and services to those who have 'fallen through the net' whilst increasingly, as each hub beds into its community, supporting those who have not yet reached these stages. This motivation to 'do something' practical imbues the charity; veteran's needs (not neediness) lie at the heart of all that it does. FirstLight is a solutions-based charity; when problems present through the door (and every member of the charity works at the cliff face dealing with veterans in need) the charity aims to find solutions. Hence its increasing focus on the problems caused by isolation and mental health. Doing nothing or 'handing off' problems is not a solution that FirstLight is comfortable with nor does it answer the problems or needs; and every attempted suicide in a community highlights the ever-growing need for practical, community-based solutions.

Asociacion Provida de Venezuela - Provive

To promote the dignity and respect of women and girls, protecting them and their children from the social and personal repercussions of irresponsible parenthood and the degrading influences of slum life. Years of work in the lower-income areas of Venezuela prompted us, 35 years ago, to create 'Alive to the World', an original values-based curriculum, specially prepared by a team of international experts, designed for classroom use. Alive to the World uses positive psychology for each and every developmental stage of growth from preschool to adulthood, educating in understanding the importance of values and integrity, appealing to the emotions and demonstrating their use in everyday life ("Educating Head, Heart and Hand", T. Lickona). Our program, Alive to the World, in fully aligned with UNESCO's Goals for the XXI Century: Knowledge, Motivation and Skills. Seeing the effectivity of the story-telling technique, the anthropologically structured scaffolding and the non-judgemental approach to strengthening the person, family and community in all regions, our goal and mission is to implement our program in all deprived schools in Venezuela. To be active and outspoken in bringing public awareness to the dangers of a growing cohort of young males, with no formation in values, joining gangs, and the corresponding teenage mothers, in the vicious cycle of abandoned street children. To work to end the epidemic vicious cycle of poverty resulting from single, unprepared mothers and fatherless children in Venezuela with a coherent, structured and easily applicable educational program. To lead our team of experts in creating, updating, testing and improving educational curricula for the promotion of the universal values of integrity and responsibility in the modern world, constantly adapting to present challenges. To lead a concerted and special effort to teach the logic of the universally recognized values, and the logic of the Golden Rule. We are aware this need exists as not only the streets become dangerous but schools become ever more chaotic. The objective is to help children to grow in an understanding of the need to consider others, in every way, as they would like to be considered. This is the Golden Rule. To be happy and useful, they must learn to respect others, as they want to be respected and to treat others, as they would like to be treated. To educate young mothers in their children's growing experience focused on their future needs to live with human dignity. To design, coordinate and implement local programs in politically, socially and economically stricken Venezuela to help the pregnant mother, as well as their future children, healthy or challenged. To connect families with challenged babies with international experts in pursuit of their true potential, facilitating trained personnel to instruct and implement techniques and methods of achieving tailored programs of human potential at home. This program is called 'Proyecto Leopoldo'. Finally, our mission is to rebuild Venezuela teaching integrity to children and adolescents through this proven method.

Smart Villages Foundation

Can remote villages have the same opportunities as urban centres? Can rural residents have access to careers, clean water, healthcare, education, productive agriculture and communication-without leaving their villages? Smart Villages believes that people in remote villages deserve the same opportunities as everyone else. Remote villages are often "off the grid" and do not have a reliable supply of energy for lighting homes, cooking, charging mobile phones, or powering businesses. The energy sources they do have, such as kerosene lamps, are often harmful to their health. The national grid may never reach many of these remote villages, but other solutions exist. We believe that energy access in off-grid communities is one of the services that can change lives-but only if it is implemented for the long-term and includes community involvement and training. And for development to happen sustainably, energy and other technologies must be harnessed for productive use, and for the innovative provision of community-level services (for example health and education), so that community residents are able to access all the basic services they need, despite their physical remoteness. Every village can be a "smart village." Smart Villages has provided policy makers, donors and development agencies concerned with rural energy access with new insights on the real barriers to energy access and innovation-driven rural development in villages in developing countries - technological, financial and political - and how they can be overcome. We are focusing more on remote off-grid villages, where local solutions (home- or institution-based systems, and mini-grids) are both more realistic and cheaper than national grid extension. But our approach is equally valid in other situations. Our concern is to ensure that energy access goes hand in hand with smarter, more integrated thinking about rural communities, and results in development and the creation of 'smart villages' in which many of the benefits of life in modern societies are available. In our ongoing work, we aim to demonstrate how Smart Villages and integrated rural development initiatives can be created in a sustainable and community-driven manner, and to evidence how this new holistic rural development paradigm can yield superior, lasting development impacts. We are also committed to investigating innovative technologies that can help deliver some of these integrated development objectives - for example innovative agricultural technology, cold storage, ICT access, remote education and telemedicine. We aim to win grant funding, and raise charitable funding, to implement projects to help catalyse sustainable community-led and focussed rural development worldwide, but particularly in Africa, where we already have a number of active projects.

Education For All Ltd

Education For All (EFA) believes that education a basic human right, and that educated girls educate the next generation. EFA focuses on girls from rural, remote areas of Morocco's High Atlas region who are missing out on secondary education due to living too far away from schools and being too poor to afford transport. EFA was founded in 2007 to respond to the high levels of illiteracy (estimated at 70%) amongst girls in the most deprived and remote areas of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Instead of going to school, girls were staying home, doing domestic chores, marrying young and remaining in the cycle of poverty with limited choices in life. The 3 main obstacles for girls in rural Morocco to access school are Their villages are too far away from the secondary schools Their families are too poor to afford the travel costs There is low awareness of and value for educating girls THE SIMPLE SOLUTION EFA builds and runs safe and well equipped girls' boarding houses. We currently accommodate 250 girls in 6 houses, from the ages of 12-18 yrs. The EFA houses are a 'home away from home'. They are staffed by local women which helps to create an environment where their culture is respected and trust is built with the local community. They have 3 nutritious meals a day, hot showers, computer rooms and plenty of books and learning support. We also run an international volunteer programme to support the girls in their studies and activities which broaden their horizons. OR $85 per month or $1000 per year. IMPACT The short-term impact of EFA's work is that many girls now have the opportunity to go to school who otherwise would be at home. Since 2007 we have given access to a full secondary education for 370 girls. These girls are now young women want to become lawyers, scientists, teachers and entrepreneurs! We now have over 130 girls enrolled at University since 2013, with two now studying their Master's Degrees, 3 on full university scholarships and one who just graduated to become a Biology teacher. The longer-term impact is that these young women will be able to become financially independent, contribute to the workforce and economy and have more choice and voice in their families and society, ensuring progressive equality for future generations. They have also inspired a positive shift in attitudes in their communities towards educating girls, and are strong role models to their sisters and friends, demonstrating what is possible for them and how to realise their potential through education.

Taghyeer Organization - We Love Reading

Taghyeer Organization/ We Love Reading Program is an innovative model that provides a practical, cost efficient, sustainable, grassroots approach empowering communities from low and mid income communities around the world to create changemakers through reading. WLR supports the activism of local volunteers to increase reading levels among children 2-10 by focusing on the readaloud experience to instill the love of reading for pleasure among children to become lifelong learners. We aim to create system change. We create changemakers by recruiting and training adults and youth from local communities to provide read-aloud sessions for local children in safe, public spaces. Each year, WLR volunteers read to tens of thousands of children in public parks, community centers, mosques and other faith-based settings, nurseries, refugee camps, and other locales. We serve diverse populations and communities irrespective of gender, religion, social status, disability, literacy level, educational experience, etc. The training is either implemented in face-to-face settings or via our online platform to allow reaching wider audience of people wanting to volunteer and become reading ambassadors.
