The Literacy Council of Durham Region is a charitable, non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to increasing literacy in the Durham Region. Guided by the principle of Each One, Teach One, volunteer tutors and staff members identify individual learner needs and design learning activities to help meet goals related to independence, employment or further education/training. The Literacy Council has been in operation since 1980 and provides an essential service within the region, with a recent International Adult Literacy Survey indicating that 1 out of 5 adults in the Durham Region need help with reading and writing. Since 2005 the Council has worked with over 420 learners and delivered 16,409 hours of direct literacy instruction. Without the generous support of funders and volunteers, the Council would not be able to help adult learners reach their goals and enrich their lives. Please consider making a donation today.

The Institute is presently staffed by Director Gordon Rixon, S.J., Associate Director Michael Vertin and three full-time editors: Robert Croken, S.J., Michael Shields, S.J. and Daniel Monsour. Robert Doran continues to lead the Collected Works project as General Editor from his new position at Marquette University. Murray McCarthy, Adrienne Pereira, Georgina Rooney and other members of the Regis College staff provide invaluable administrative support. The Institute works collaboratively with other centers around the world that preserve, promote, develop and implement the thought of Lonergan. The directors and staff always welcome suggestions and feedback from their colleagues.

Qurbani Darul Uloom Press Release (Toronto, Ontario) Darul Uloom Bownmanville, a division of Madresa Ashraful Uloom, has arranged Qurbani (Udhiyya) to be done in Canada in order to benefit students studying Islam at the Darul Uloom. The sacrificed sheep/lamb meat will be distributed and utilized at the Darul Uloom Bowmanville boarding school. Cost is only $220 with tax-deductible receipt provided by M.A. Uloom, which has been running two Islamic schools in Toronto and recently purchased a 110 acre boarding school as a Darul Uloom/Islamic University. Darul Uloom started operating September 2005 and currently has close to 100 male students boarding. Later in 2006, a female stream will start with boarding facilities.

Chebucto Connections (also known as Chebucto Community Development Association (CCDA)) is a charitable organization made up of local volunteers, that engages the community in making their neighbourhoods vibrant healthy places to live and work. We add value to community by helping others help themselves We have been helping people build connections to build community, with a focus on individual and community strenghts and assets, since 1985.

Peace Festival A yearly Peace Festival is organized in our local neighbourhood.. Community-building activities Community meals, special events, organized outings and activities draw people out of isolation and rebuild personal support networks. Community student residence Near Montreal’s four major universities, it offers lodging in a community living and peace church context. There will also be opportunities for volunteering with Maison de l'amitié programs. Community space We offer low cost rental (or free) community space to our local community for meetings or events. Pastoral Refugee Support Network This program is develops a support network for communities of faith where many of the members struggle with having been suddenly uprooted and having experienced organized violence or torture. The Maitland Conservation Foundation is a registered, charitable, non-profit organization that supports the environmental work of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. Established in 1975 the Foundation's Board of Directors and members are volunteers. The Maitland Conservation Foundation works in partnership with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to raise funds for conservation projects. Currently the Foundation is working to ensure the availability of environmental education programs in the Maitland watershed, to support projects that will build the environmental resiliency of the watershed and to upgrade facilities at local conservation areas. Donors are welcome to direct their donations to specific initiatives including the John Hindmarsh Environmental Trust Fund, the Geoff Walker Memorial Fund, the Wawanosh Nature Centre, tree planting/environmental restoration efforts, Memorial Grove and Falls Reserve Conservation Area. MARL holds a variety of innovative set of educational activities public events, including an annual Human Rights Film Festival and public lectures. MARL works in schools helping develop teachers’ skills to help support curriculum and run the 'Leadership in Social Justice Program'. This unique approach inspires youth about social justice issues and empowers them to take action by building the skills to run programs focusing on issues in their communities. MARL works to change policies to uphold rights through legislative review by preparing briefs and studies at all levels of government. MARL also provides referral and legal information in response to inquiries from individuals. For young people interested in learning about their rights, MARL has developed the Under 18 Handbook, a Legal Guide for Manitoba Teens. This free handbook is available in hardcopy and on our website.

Each year Wildlife Haven receives approximately 1,700 birds, mammals and reptiles and several thousands of public inquiries by phone. The organization receives and cares for injured and orphaned wildlife for release back to the wild. The wildlife rehabilitation centre operates according to the best established guidelines, protocols and treatments. The centre provides and promotes public education in wildlife conservation. Wildlife Haven provides humane maintenance of non-releasable wildlife for educational purposes. The organization also collects information pertaining to wildlife rehabilitation to conduct non-invasive research studies.

Meewasin is a conservation agency dedicated to conserving the cultural and natural resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley in the Saskatoon region. Meewasin principals: - valley resources accessible to everyone; - recreation and development balanced with resource conservation; - opportunity for diverse activities to meet a variety of interests; - public ownership in decision making.

The Boys and Girls Club of London is fortunate to have The Boys and Girls Club of London Foundation. This organization not only provides extra support for all the various programs and services at the Boys and Girls Club, but it also creates special events and fundraising tools to meet larger fundraising goals. By meeting these larger goals the Foundation is able to help the Boys and Girls Club to continue to grow and provide the programs and services that are needed in the community.
