Sala Diaz

Located in the heart of the Southtown Cultural Arts District, Sala Diaz provides a unique venue for the exhibition of new and challenging work, and fosters lasting exchange between our city and creative communities abroad. Housed in the same residential structure as the gallery, The Casa Chuck Arts Residency is an invitational program through which Sala Diaz provides critics, curators and writers a haven for varied creative pursuits. Initiated in 2011, the residency honors the legacy of visionary artist, arts advocate and bon vivant Chuck Ramirez who died the previous year. Official residents spend one month living in Ramirez’ former abode, exploring and interacting with the surrounding arts community. In between official residencies, Sala/Casa hosts a wide variety of arts professionals including critics, curators, musicians, scholars and visual artists. Sala Diaz is supported by fluent~collaborative and numerous private individuals.

Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum

The mission of Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum is to inspire the creative genius in us all by nurturing artists in an innovative contemporary art museum. Developed from a grassroots event in July of 1986, Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum is the first and longest-running venue for contemporary art in San Antonio. The establishment of Blue Star as an exhibition space arose from the need to provide a platform for the work and ideas of local contemporary artists. In the years since its inception, Blue Star Contemporary has grown with the community, instigating positive change in both the art community and the community at large. The development of Blue Star Contemporary's exhibitions and educational programming has resulted in the social and economic revitalization of the surrounding Lavaca, King William, and South Town neighborhoods. The event that started it all in the summer of 1986 has developed into Contemporary Art Month, an annual event that now includes over fifty collaborating organizations, cultural centers, museums, and alternative spaces. Now in its twenty-eighth year, Blue Star continues to be an incubator for contemporary art in San Antonio, hosting over twenty exhibitions each year within its four on-site galleries and multiple offsite locations within the community. These exhibitions feature both emerging and world-renowned artists who hail both from the Alamo City and across the globe. Over 300,000 visitors each year experience contemporary art at Blue Star through exhibitions, the MOSAIC after-school education program, and community events, which is why Blue Star Contemporary stands firm in its commitment to inspire the creative genius in us all.

Independent Shakespeare Company

ISC serves our community through creating inspiring, accessible theater and bringing it to as wide an audience as possible. Our actions and our art are informed by the following beliefs: • Classic plays are our cultural legacy and, like all great art, they are a vital part of forming bonds both within our community as well as to the past. • Diversity within the production, as well as in the audience, creates stronger, more entertaining theatrical experiences. • The audience’s understanding and enjoyment of the theater experience is of paramount importance. • Great writing and skillful performances take precedence over the technical elements of contemporary theatre. • Dynamic speaking and innovative staging are the primary means of engaging the audience’s imagination. • Productions of classical plays should be readily available to all. • There is no greater cause than to expand current audiences and create future ones.

Benetech

Non-profit social entrepreneurial venture harnessing the power of technology for social benefit. Benetech has adopted a core set of principles to guide our vision and decision making. We refer to these concepts daily in evaluating our work and our plans for the future. 1. Social Change Through Technology—Benetech is about creating positive social change at scale, and we use technology as the vehicle to drive it. Technology is a great way to get to scale and to reinvent the way people are doing business throughout the social sector. We’re not about profit; we’re about impact. 2. We Get Stuff Done—Benetechies are intensely results focused. We aim high, and then try to exceed our commitments. This means that we fully commit to the fields where we operate, learning as much as we can and following through on our promises. And we measure what we do so that we know we’re getting stuff done. 3. Right Stuff Right—Just three words that convey so much. We ensure that our work is up to world-class standards, focus on doing the right thing where we can make the maximum impact, and conduct business in an ethical way. When we’re trying to make a decision about something, the way forward is just so much clearer when someone asks, “Yes, but are we doing the right thing right?” 4. Open Over Proprietary—We’re an open-source organization. Not only our software but also the content we create is almost always available under Creative Commons licenses. And we value transparency. What’s really important is the mission, and we trust that being clear and open will lead to the best possible outcomes. There is information that we do consider highly proprietary: the information shared with us by our users and partners. We’re pragmatic enough to adopt a proprietary approach when we think it’s the best way to accomplish our mission goals, but we always lean toward being open. 5. Partnership Over Going Alone—Benetech’s strength is in developing technology responsive to real-world needs, but we can’t do it alone. In so many areas, we have chosen the partners who have deep knowledge and deep trust networks. Benetech provides what they are missing—the technology development expertise and the connections with top tech communities and companies. Our partnerships result in better ultimate social impact when we’ve built trust with the people with whom we’re working. 6. Value Flexibility—We respect our team and their commitment to do what it takes for social change. As part of that commitment, we prioritize flexibility both for and from our team members. This allows us to do more with less, without sacrificing teamwork and spirit. Our entrepreneurial approach also requires flexibility. When you’re creating something new, it never goes according to plan. We are always alert to better ways to accomplish the social objectives. 7. Personal and Professional Development—We care about the professional development of our staff and foster personal learning, growth and service—whether that’s helping a team member pursue graduate studies, become a better public speaker or deeply understand the challenges our users face. Benetech builds the careers of our team members while we benefit from their service to our mission. Ultimately, we’re helping to lead a movement to have technology fully serve humanity. We speak regularly to students and to professionals, sharing our love for our work and hoping to inspire a fresh crop of social entrepreneurs and innovators.
