While visiting Germany in the 1930's, the Japanese violinist, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki became awestruck with the notion that German babies could speak German while he himself was struggling. Returning to Japan, he dedicated himself to the philosophy that any child has the ability to learn given the right nurturing environment.
Since then, thousands of children throughout the world have learned music with the mother-tongue approach:
~ children absorb, then later copy, the sounds of music in the recordings they listen to ~ children begin with sounds which later develop into longer phrases ~ children are encouraged to repeat each step to ensure mastery ~ children accumulate their “vocabulary” of pieces and do not discard them as they progress ~ children learn to read music once basic posture is secure
The Suzuki String School of Guelph has been in existence since 1972, and is one of the oldest programs in Canada. The School has an international reputation of excellence.
