Thanks to You, We Did It! We are Shipping 95 Refurbished Laptops To Guéoul, Senegal – In Time for Fall Classes! Thank you, thank you! You have made the computer drive a success! Thanks to your help and a grant from the For a Better Tomorrow Foundation, we have been able to purchase 95 laptops and can air freight them in about a week to Guéoul. We’ll take pictures when they arrive and share them with you - you will see smiles all around! It’s hard to say how deeply your help is appreciated by the Friends of Guéoul and the students in Guéoul, Senegal. The laptops replace 15+ year old computers that can no longer be updated and need constant repairs. The new computers will be updatable and loaded with current educational software and operating systems favored in Africa. With better computer access, FoG students can pursue STEM coursework, develop their computer skills, learn English at a faster rate and participate in distance mentoring programs and career counseling – in short, join the digital world and overcome poverty by gaining a world-class education focused on STEM topics. FoG programs meet student needs in ways that might surprise those who come from more advantaged backgrounds. For instance, even though the existing computers are more than 15-years old, they have been so cherished that FoG has hired a donkey cart driver to take the computers from the classroom each day to a locked facility, and then to return them the next day.

Be part of a virtuous cycle! Nogaye Diop, one of our original students, graduated from college with an IT degree and returned to work this year as the assistant IT teacher. This is what she has to say: It's a dream come true for me to go to study and return to give back to Friends of Guéoul. I've been working for Friends of Guéoul for a few months now. When I started working in the community, I noticed that, thanks to the Friends of Guéoul in the schools, the girls are very engaged, their attitude has changed and they are determined to succeed. The team did an excellent job in this project, supporting the girls in their work with several disciplines, visiting everyone to see their living conditions and providing solutions once there is a problem. I love this job because when I studied computer science at university, I always thought I wanted to come back and help my community and now I'm able to do that by working with Friends of Guéoul. I would like to sincerely thank you for the opportunity you gave me to join your team. I am extremely happy and honored to have been chosen for this position.
