Pledge to make a difference, together.
The Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland strives to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome senior dogs. We will provide a permanent safe haven if the dog is not adopted. Many of the dogs that come through our doors were unable to be cared for by their owners, were abandoned or abused, or faced euthanasia.
We opened in 2016 and have had over 700 dogs adopted out. We provide the medical care needed by each senior dog, including a full senior panel, and whatever care is needed up to and including surgery. Almost every senior dog needs a dental upon arrival. We spend, on average, $3,000 per dog. Our goal is to give them a second chance at life in a loving home. We want them to be as healthy as possible. We provide medication and most of the dogs are required to have prescription dog food to help with their medical conditions.
We have a brick and mortar facility with kennels and a quarantine building. Our small but dedicated staff, as well as our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs and provide enrichment activities to keep them engaged. We also have a foster and hospice program so that the dogs can live in a home environment whenever possible. We give dogs with behavioral issues training to help them become more adoptable.
We have also initiated a Seniors 2 Seniors Program to help senior citizens keep their pets by providing free dog and cat food. Thank you for considering the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland.
Buddy was abused and neglected. His abuse left him with his front legs locked and his ear severely damaged. Although we went to several specialists, they did not feel surgery was an option to repair his legs. However he did need surgery for his ear damage. He became one of the most beloved dogs here at the Sanctuary and he was treated with kindness and respect and his personality blossomed. We have had special carts made for him to help him keep strength in his back legs. He is currently being fostered by a staff member. Although we hope he finds a permanent loving home, he will continue to get the love and care he needs.
